We have a tendency to view hunger as a bad thing, although it can be a slightly annoying feeling at times, it’s certainly not bad. In fact, hunger is a natural signal just as yawning or needing to use the bathroom. Now here’s the thing, feeling hungry in waves is normal, feeling hungry all day long is not. Most people feel their best when eating small meals throughout the day, if you feel that you’re hungry all the time it may be due to one of the reasons below.
Lacking Fiber or Protein
Obviously, all of our macronutrients are important to keeping a happy healthy body, and we need them all for different reasons. Carbs for example provide the body with quick energy boosts. Protein and fiber are crucial in sustaining that energy during your day. In addition to that though, foods high in protein and fiber have been shown to keep you feeling fuller longer. This is primarily due to the way those foods breakdown and release the nutrients in to your body.
If you constantly feel hungry try to incorporate more fiber and protein in to your diet. Be careful not to go overboard though as you want to ensure your keeping everything balanced.
Eat More
If you’re constantly hungry, the cause might be the simplest one. You may not be eating enough food during your meals. The strange thing about hunger though is that it doesn’t always show up as a rumbling or tightness in your stomach, sometimes it can show up as fatigue. If you feel like you’re at this point it might be worth it to adjust your meals and eating schedule so that you’re eating smaller, balanced meals more consistently through your day.
Not Being Present While Eating
Sometimes it’s hard to be 100% present when you’re eating, life is so hectic that it kind of makes sense. This could be the main reason why you always feel hungry though. In this study by Cambridge University, they showed that non-distracted eaters had a reduction in their desire to finish their entire plate of food, while distracted eaters consumed the whole thing. Being mindful and present while eating may help you feel fuller during the day, but in addition to that it could also cut back on over-eating and food cravings.
You Need To Sleep More
Sleep is honestly the key factor in almost every aspect of life, and oddly enough that includes hunger. Sleeping helps to regulate specific hormones that may contribute to hunger. This study shows that shorter sleeping cycles have actually been linked to a hormone that stimulates your appetite and reduced the hormone that tells your body it’s full! So if you’re constantly living with “Sleep Debt” you’re more likely to constantly feel hungry and to crave unhealthy sugary foods.
Focus on learning a healthy sleep habit, as well as eating smaller balanced meals evenly spread through your day and you may finally be able to control that constant hunger you’re feeling.
