Battle Of The Ages: Diet Vs. Exercise

We all want something in life, and for many off us around the world those wants vary wildly from person to person. However, there may be one thing you want that millions and millions of others want as well. That is to be lean and fit, to have the body you’ve always wanted, and to be able to wear the clothes you want without feeling stressed out about how it looks on you.

It doesn’t matter if your goal is to trim some extra weight so you feel better, look better, or so that you’re just in better shape in order to handle whatever it is life throws at you, you probably want to be able to get there in the most efficient way possible.

So, you have two option in regards to where you put the most emphasis.

Emphasis: Diet

Diet, as a whole, have a negative aura around them as of late (Thanks fad diets), but the truth is. Proper dieting is still a hugely vital process when it comes to losing weight. Research has actually stated that if you choose to only do one thing in your weight loss journey, diet should be your choice.

Ok, but what exactly is dieting? Essentially, dieting means paying very close attention to the things that you eat. That’s not all though, just paying attention doesn’t actually make you lose weight. You need to track it, and then you need to reduce the amount of calories that you intake. I don’t mean cut it in half right off the bat, but you should certainly reduce the amount of calories that you intake in comparison to the amount of caloric burn you have throughout the day.

To take this all a step further and to ensure that you’re getting the most “bang for your buck” you’ll want to really focus on an intake of good calories. This means that you choose to snack on celery and almond butter instead of a bag of chips and some dip. Choose fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, lean protein and lots and lots of water.

Emphasis: Exercise

Not surprisingly, exercise has gotten a bad name as well (once again... thanks fad exercise routines). The worst part, some of those fad routines were downright dangerous. Now, luckily, exercise hasn’t been forgotten in the wake of all this fad nonsense. That’s because people do still realize that you need to actually get to the gym if you’re going to drop the most amount of weight.

Just like diet, you need to balance the amount of calories you intake versus the amount of calories you exert. But, with exercise, the goal is to burn more calories than you intake.

When it comes to weight loss, exercise is different than diet because it actually allows your body to focus on where the weight loss is coming from. Not a specific area of your body, more specifically, it allows your body to lose weight from fat while maintaining and building muscle.

The best part? If you have more muscle, your body will naturally burn more calories even when you aren’t exercising!

And The Winner Is?

Let’s be honest for a second here, you probably read this thinking that exercise alone would help you lose weight, more than likely because you hate the idea of diets. There are some of you out there reading this who may actually be from the other camp. Those of you who detest that thought of exercise and hope that diet will get you to your goals.

Bad news y’all. This battle, has been never ending. Turns out, it’s a draw.

If your goal is to lose weight, but you aren’t willing to eat right AND exercise, sadly, any success you see right now will be gone sooner than you can imagine. It doesn’t matter how hard you try, one of these alone isn’t enough to have an overall healthy lifestyle. If you end up getting more serious about losing weight you’ll eventually get to a point where you’re even more careful about what you’re eating because you don’t want to waste all that time and energy spent exercising.

There’s no quick fix, there’s no shortcut, and there’s no winner in the battle of diet vs exercise. If you keep pitting each of them against the other, the only loser in the situation, is you.
