How To Save Those Precious Avocados

Do you happen to have some extra avocado hanging around from the last salad you made? Maybe you cut more than you needed for your avocado toast. Whatever the reason is, if you have some extra avocado. You’re probably in a great state of despair, because as we know; a cut avocado turns brown after about 6 hours.

Don’t fret though! I have good news. You can freeze your avocado.

Yes, you read that correctly. I did in fact say freeze

There are a few different ways you can freeze your avocados, they’re all super easy to do and really efficient. All you need is a little bit of time.

It’s important to note that when you freeze your avocados, you’ll have to use them for something other than just sliced avocado (like Guac). Although the flavor stays the same, the texture changes a bit after freezing them. And frankly, it feels weird when on a salad or in a sandwich.

Read on down below to see these nifty little hacks to save that glorious green fruit (yes, it is indeed a fruit)

HOW TO FREEZE AVOCADO

MASH IT

The easiest way to free your extra avocado is to mash it. Remove the peel, place avocado on a flat surface, then mash with a fork.

Once mashed, place it into a ziploc bag. Flatten the avocado out in the bag for easy storage within your freezer. Flattening the bag is especially useful if you have a lot of avocado to freeze, or are tight on space in the freezer.

CUBE IT

Another really easy way to store avocado is to cube it. For this we start the same way as above. Take your avocado and mash it.

Now, take out an empty ice cube tray. Spray (Or lightly coat) the inside with olive oil. Now scoop the avocado into the ice cube tray. Cover with tin foil or plastic wrap. Cubing avocado is another way it can be frozen.

CUT IT IN HALF

Short on time and can’t do all the fancy stuff to freeze your precious avocado? Take the unused half, place it on a cookie sheet or other flat surface, squeeze some lemon or lime juice over the top of the avocado.

Put the avocado in a plastic bag, squeeze gently (don’t smoosh the avocado) to remove excess air. Toss that bad boy in the freezer and carry on with your day.

When you’re ready to use the perfectly preserved avocado, take it out of the freezer, place it on a plate or cookie sheet and let thaw at room temp for approximately 30 minutes.

Now you’re ready to whip up some quick guacamole!

Enjoy!
