Natural Morning Sickness Remedies



Let’s get this out of the way first. Morning sickness should honestly just be called pregnancy sickness (Or something like that). When I was pregnant with Rei, I was sick all day, literally ALL DAY. It didn’t matter what time it was. It’s not just me either, I know plenty of mothers who feel the same way, and these countless stories online from others around the world.

It’s a totally unpleasant experience, and although there are medicines for “Morning sickness” I, and many other mothers don’t want to us them. For me, it wasn’t that I didn’t think it would help. I didn’t want to put some chemically laden substance created in a lab in our body while I was growing this little munchkin. I searched far and wide through plains and mountains... I used to google, to find some natural ways to combat what I was feeling.


Morning Sickness Remedies

1. Sour Foods Are Your Friend

One of the first things I found was eating or drinking something sour. I don’t like artificial citrus flavors so the common tip of eating a lemon candy or something didn’t work for me. What did work was drinking lemon water. I also ate sour patch kids (because of morning sickness, or just because they’re amazing?). This can be a double-edged sword though, as I sometimes got some pretty bad heartburn from the lemon water.

2. Keep Snacks Accessible.

Anyone that knows me, knows that I typically would never tell you to keep snacks around and to snack throughout the day. But pregnant me? Pshhh, I snacked like it was my job. And Mama’s it’s ok. Provided you’re not eating super unhealthy snacks all day (Baby needs healthy nutrients remember?). There were many times when I noticed I was feeling sick because my stomach was empty. Every time I felt like this, I’d eat a small snack. Most of the time that kept the sick feeling at bay.


3. Hard Candies

A common tip that I found was having hard candies around all the time. It seemed odd to me, but I tried it anyway. And oddly enough, it helped keep some of the nausea away. I’m not really sure why this works, but give it a shot.


4. Chew Ginger

Another common tip that you can find almost everywhere is to eat ginger. Now, I would recommend biting into ginger root, but there are a few suggestions that will certainly help. You could try ginger snaps, they’re easy enough to find and you can keep a box next to you wherever you are. Something that I had laying around was a package of ginger chews, these are typically used for motion sickness (Why I had them) but they worked great for morning sickness. The other option is to eat sliced ginger, you know the kind that you get when you order sushi.


5. Peppermint

Peppermint has so many uses in life, it’s kind of crazy. It’s calming, it’s numbing, it tastes great, and it helps with nausea. There are a lot of options for this one. You can put a few drops of peppermint oil on your neck or chest, or add it to an aromatherapy infuser. You could chew some peppermint gum, or eat a peppermint mint. These all helped me at different points. Hopefully they ease some of your discomfort.

7. Stay Away from Carbonation, Citrus and Fried Foods.

All of the above can sometimes cause bloating, gas and maybe heartburn. The bloating and gas will more than likely make the nausea even worse. And having heartburn from something you ate is an uncomfortable experience when feeling nauseous.

 

8. TAKE EXTRA B6

For some unknown reason Vitamin B6 has been known to help certain women combat the feeling of nausea. Be careful with this one though, don’t self-administer, be sure to consult your doctor first to ensure that taking in added B6 is safe.

I really do help that some of the tips above help you with your “morning sickness” like they helped me. Keep watch of yourself, if you feel that your too sick be sure to check in with your doctor. The last thing we want is for you to get dehydrated or have something worse going on that you miss.
