If you aren’t one of the lucky few in the world who live on a farm and grow / raise their own food, you’ve probably stepped foot into a supermarket / grocery store at least once in your life. It seems like such an innocent place.
What if I told you that this seemingly innocent looking building is actually the source, and probably a large part of the cause for you weight gain?
Not so innocent anymore is it? Here’s what I mean.
If you think about your recent trips to the super market, there’s probably a good chance that they’ve been largely disorganized. There’s a large chance that your most recent shopping cart was more fat the fit. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.
The good news is, that with a few adjustments we can get that grocery trip turned into an easy way to shed some unwanted weight!
I’ve created this easy to remember acronym for you that should help you navigate your local supermarket. The acronym? HEALTHY
Let’s take a look at how this can help you.
H: Herbivores
This doesn’t mean you need to become a vegetarian, it’s just an easy way to remember that veggies are super important. When you first walk in, make a bee line for the produce section. Once I started doing this shopping got a whole lot easier for me. This is the part of the supermarket where the majority of your shopping should take place.
E: Enriched isn’t good
Enriched white bread, the most common place bread item in any supermarket. It isn’t good for you. Manufactures process and fill the flour used to make these breads with simple carbs, these are your worst enemy. Simple carbs stick to your body as fat. What you should be looking for in the bread isle is wheat bread, these contain more fiber and are far healthier for you.
A: Always go lean
When walking through the meat section of your local store, you’re constantly faced with two decisions. Go with more savory meat choices (Higher fat) or go with the healthy choice. I am highly suggesting the healthier lower fat option. Lean meat choices have been increasingly easier to find lately, and the benefits of choosing lean meats are plentiful. The two biggest are the lower levels of saturated fats (happy heart) and the lower calories that are in each piece of lean meat.
L: Leave the junk
My long standing and hardly ever broken (look, nobody is perfect...) rule for shopping is this.
Don’t walk down the junk food aisle. For most of us, it’s nearly impossible to walk past all of the cookies, chips, candies, and snack foods and not toss a few in the cart. Thanks to the wonders of color psychology, the manufactures of these junk foods have figured out how to make our brain work against us and make us crave the things we don’t need.
Just make your shopping easier, and your weight loss journey less painful by staying out of this aisle.
T: Trace the edges
The easiest trick in the book for shopping clean and keeping your cart as healthy as possible. Trace the edges of the store, what I mean by this, is to only shop the outside edge of the store. All of the healthiest and most natural foods are along the perimeter of the store. The inner aisles are filled with processed food, junk food, baked goods, and sugary stuff. Although there are a few aisles in the center of the store that hide healthy products, the vast majority of those aisles are no good for you.
H: Halve the fat
The dairy section, this is the hardest part of the store honestly. Healthy items intermingled with totally unhealthy items, almost all of them very similar visually. It’s a hard section to be in. But you can walk out of here with healthy items added to your cart if you take a little extra time.
Most of us have go to items in this section, and I can promise that the majority of us purchase the full fat versions. If you just switch the full fat version for the low-fat version you’ve already made a huge dent in your fat intake, and given your body a giant jump on weight loss.
Y: You’re made of water
It’s no secret that we’re made of 60% water. So, when you’re reaching for a drink, why would you reach for a sugary juice or soda? Juice, soda and alcohol are filled with sugars and calories that are all completely unnecessary and are responsible for a large number of added calories in your diet. Do yourself a favor and don’t add these items to your cart.
If you’re looking for a flavorful drink, why not take some fresh fruits, chop them up and add them to some pure and natural water! That’s it guys! That’s the quick and easy secret to shopping for HEALTHY results.
Write these steps down on an index card and take it shopping with you on your next trip.
