Ok, first. Everyone falls off of the exercise wagon. So, before you go and use the excuse of, I can’t do it because of “X” just stop. We’ve all been through it.
And honestly, if you go through your days actively looking for an excuse to “Fall off” I can promise you the universe will provide one promptly and precisely.
Here’s the typical cycle that happens when you fall off the “exercise wagon”
First You Fall Off
Here’s the thing, your fall off the wagon typically happens in a single moment and quite suddenly. But there could also be a long drawn out process that slowly gives you reasons not to get to the gym or do your exercise. Conversely, you could have a slow fall off due to health concerns or life getting in to the way.
Once you’ve actually fallen off, that’s when the real damage starts to pile up and take its toll on you. Then You Surrender
At this point you’ve fallen off, now comes the moment when you actually realize what’s happened. And then, you give up. Completely and utterly surrender to the fact that you’ve done the same thing you always do. Depending on what your coping mechanism is the moment could present itself when you make the conscious decision to eat anything you want. Or maybe you go back to a previous habit of stress eating.
As you might imagine, this is the most damaging part of the whole process. You’ve already resigned to the fact that you “can’t” do it. So you allow yourself to plummet down the rabbit hole of unhealthy thoughts and you completely revers any positive progress you’ve made to this point. Rock Bottom
Eventually you’ll get to this stage, this is the stage that most people dread ever getting to. But there almost always seems to be a positive reaction once you do hit this stage. But first, you have to hit it. This is when you look at yourself and actually see all of the additional weight you’ve put on. Then the emotional weight hits you because you’ve now visualized everything you’ve secretly been dreading after you fell off.
You’ll probably be flooded with negative self-deprecating and defeatists thoughts. As painful as this step is, it’s a necessary one. It helps you take back the control in your life. Grabbing Life by The Horns
Here’s the whirlwind experience. You’ve hit bottom, and seen how bad things have gotten. You’ve talked yourself into a deep hole of regret and defeat.
There is however a light shining in through that hole you’re in. So, you start to scramble and pull yourself back towards it. You start making small changes in life to get back on to solid ground. You start to set healthy guidelines for your diet, and slowly you get back in to your exercise routine.
How to Stop It
Now that you’ve started to take control again, follow the few tips below to keep up the pace. The easiest way to stop yourself from falling off the exercise wagon is to set specific goals that are realistically attainable and have a specific timeframe. Start making small wins.
