Time and time again, history has stated that our habits have the power to shape who we become. There have been plenty of influential people through the ages who’ve all agreed that habits are the building blocks of our success. Confucius and Aristotle happen to be two of the biggest names on the list, so if you don’t want to listen to me, listen to them!
When thinking about fitness, our habits play just as big a role as they do in the entirety of our daily life. There are two main habits that truly define who you are in regards to your fitness; your eating habits and your exercise habits. Anyone that you can think of that is in amazing shape, definitely has a solid understanding of these habits.
So, take a second to really look at what your habits are.
Are you one of the many people who’ve made it common place to eat something sweet and unhealthy before you go to bed, go to sleep late, wake up late, and never exercise.
Or, are you an individual who eats on a regular schedule, sleeps on a schedule, and exercises on a schedule?
Now that you’ve taken a little time to figure out where you stand with your habits, are you happy with where your body is right now? No?
Good! Make a change!
Adopt A Habit
Start small, find one or two thinks that you can slowly implement into your daily life. By starting small you have a much higher chance of succeeding. So, pick one or two habits from this list below and start working on them as soon as possible.
Healthy Habits:
Go to sleep at the same time every night
Get 8 hours of sleep a night
Wake up at the same time every day
Do not eat after 7PM
Exercise 3 times a week for 45 minutes
Eat healthy afternoon snacks (fruits & veggies)
Once you have your habit selected, write it down on paper. While you’re at it, write down your main motivating factors that will help you to develop this new habit. Write down any obstacles you’ll face along the way and how you’re going to overcome those obstacles.
1) My new habit is to sleep 8 hours a night
2) I am motivated to do this because:
I want to have more energy
I don’t want to deprive my body of sleep
I want to ensure that my muscles are recovering completely.
3) The obstacles I will face are:
1) Feeling like I don’t have enough time in the day
2) Not being able to fall asleep
3) I will feel like I’m missing out on time with my friends
4) I will overcome the habits by:
1) Prioritizing my time throughout the day
2) Finding a way to relax my body and calm my mind before bed
3) Explain to your friends that your health and wellbeing is important, reschedule social events to the daytime.
Make It Known! Now that you’ve selected and written down your habits, the next thing to do is to commit to those habits.
When committing to your habits, it’s important to do it in some sort of public way.
This could be any of the following:
A social media post
A text to all of your friends and family
Starting a vlog and documenting it.
Whatever you choose to do to commit to your habit, make sure it’s something that will put you in a position where you’ll be embarrassed if you give up.
Track It! Make sure you track your progress towards your habit, and make it detailed. My biggest suggestion is to use a journal to track your daily progress.
Once your new habit has become something you do without thinking about it. Start with another new habit.
