There are many different ways that you can find yourself holding on to some extra pounds. Among all of those reasons, one of the most common ones is overeating.
It typically doesn’t happen overnight, it’s normally a buildup to the end result.
If you look at most people there are a few indicators that lead to their overeating. What are they you ask?
Habit: Something most people don’t realize is that the way we eat is learned. It’s a developed pattern, most of us eat everything on the plate because our parents told us to do so. We have a full plate of food without thinking about if we actually NEED that much food.
Absentmindedness: This is a fast paced, constantly moving distracted world we live in currently. Most of us honestly just forget to pay attention when we’re eating. Or, we mindlessly snack while watching a show or a movie. Next thing we know the whole bag of chips is gone and we’ve added un-needed fat in the form of extra calories.
Coping: For some of us, the act of overeating is something deeper, something more unseen that we may not even be aware of. Eating can certainly be a coping mechanism, something that we’ve done in order to alter a mood.
So, how to you overcome these habits and stop overeating?
Pay Attention:
When eating, be very aware of what it is that you’re eating, and how much you’re eating. This might seem like a silly thing to say, but honestly doing this could save you hundreds of extra calories a day.
So, make it a point not to eat when you find that your attention may be frayed. That means no eating while watching TV, no eating while scrolling Instagram or TikTok. Be conscious of when you’re eating, don’t just put food in your mouth because you think you need to be eating.
Be Balanced:
This is something that I feel I touch on in many of my articles, and for good reason. By eating a balanced healthy meal filled with the correct portions of protein, grains and veggies paired with the proper amount of fruits throughout the day your body will be more satisfied and you’ll lose the urge to snack and overeat.
Balance truly means balance, this means that you need to really keep that food pyramid in mind and ensure that you aren’t eating too many carbs, or eating too much protein. Balance it out and really benefit from your food. Tune In
Listen to your body, it’ll tell you when you’ve been satisfied and when you’ve eaten enough food. The problem is; you’ve gotten so used to ignoring your bodies signs that you just push past your limits until you’re suddenly hit by that brick wall feeling of eating way too much.
One of the big thins to keep in mind while eating, and something that many of us (especially in the US) don’t do. Is to eat slower. By eating slower and paying attention as you eat, you’ll notice a point when each bite you take becomes less satisfying for you. This subtle change is your bodies way of telling you that it's starting to get full.
If you can control your eating habits, you’ll have a much higher chance of losing weight and keeping extra weight off.
